why did my purple carrots and ground cherries totally steal the show in my freezing zone 3 garden?

Last summer, I decided to get wild with my garden and tried growing purple carrots and ground cherries in my chilly zone 3 backyard. I was super skeptical at first—who knew these funky plants could handle the cold? But, wow, they totally thrived!
