It’s uncomfortable to talk about, but a lot of people nodded their head when he said it. He claimed that people treat you differently — sometimes flat-out worse — when the woman you’re with is considered unattractive. Not because of who she is, not because of how she treats you, but because of how others perceive her. That says more about society than it does about the couple. Some people base respect on optics. On status. On whether the person next to you boosts or lowers how they rank you in their own head. When the “look” doesn’t match their expectations, the tone changes. The jokes shift. Do our parents genuinely not remember how hard it is to raise a child, or are they just gaslighting us?

Whenever I’m struggling with my toddler’s tantrums or feeling completely burnt out, they just act like it's our generation's fault, like we're just incapable of raising a child (even though it was "sooo simple" for them). They say things like, "Oh, you were never like that," or "We just took you everywhere and you were fine." Honestly, I can’t even take that as a compliment. It just feels like gaslighting. It’s making me feel crazy! I know for a fact I wasn't some perfect angel, but they’ve completely sanitized their memories of the 80s and 90s.
