I Survived on Benefits — and I Know You’re Mad

My dad is undocumented. My family used SNAP. We used emergency Medicaid. Without it, my childhood illness might’ve ended very differently. I know saying this already makes people uncomfortable. I can almost hear the comments: “You’ve already taken enough.” The truth is, benefits are just enough to survive—never enough to live. I see taxpayers counting every dollar at checkout. I see patients waiting longer for care. I know this unfairness doesn’t come from nowhere. But without those benefits, we wouldn’t even be here to be blamed.
