The Day I Sank (Literally) in Indiana
I always thought quicksand was a movie thing—something you laugh about, not something you step into. But there I was, ankle-deep in Shades State Park, Indiana, realizing the ground could swallow you without warning.
It wasn’t dramatic. No one screamed. My friend just looked at me, half-amused, half-concerned, as I tried to wriggle free. It was slow, cold, and quietly humiliating. I didn’t panic, but I felt stupid for not seeing it coming.
Afterwards, I kept checking my shoes for mud, but what stuck was the reminder: sometimes the danger is so ordinary you don’t even recognize it until you’re stuck. I still laugh about it, but I watch my step now—everywhere.
