Former Student Says Sangamon Valley Schools Ignored Years of Bullying, Harassment, and Abuse
A former Sangamon Valley student has come forward with serious allegations of systemic neglect and abuse within the school district, claiming administrators repeatedly ignored her pleas for help spanning multiple years.
Kat Grace, who attended Sangamon Valley schools, says recent events involving a student at Sangamon Valley Middle School prompted her to share her own traumatic experience. She describes a pattern of institutional failure that allegedly persists today.
Grace played football as one of the school's only female players, serving as a starting lineman. She claims parents openly mocked her during games, lobbying coaches to bench her in favor of their sons. "Those boys told me to kill myself almost daily. The parents would witness it and root them on," Grace states.
The bullying extended beyond the field. Grace describes students slamming peers into lockers, destroying personal belongings, and cornering victims in bathrooms while staff allegedly turned a blind eye. "If you went to a teacher, the principal, or any other staff member with a problem—chances are YOU would be punished for saying something," she alleges.
Grace claims she sent emails to teachers expressing suicidal thoughts and self-harm ideation, yet received no response. According to Grace, the guidance counselor never intervened despite these red flags.
She alleges some teachers actively participated in harassment, making crude jokes and engaging in inappropriate behavior toward students. Grace credits only one staff member, librarian Ms. Brian, with genuinely listening to students.
"Sangamon Valley schools have failed a student extremely badly at this point in time. They have been failing students for over a decade," Grace concludes, calling for accountability within the district.
The school district has not yet responded to these allegations.
