27th Birthday: The Year My Reflection Blinked First
I used to think 27 would be just another year—work, bills, maybe a few regrets. But then, three weeks before my birthday, the bathroom mirror started acting wrong.
It wasn’t the usual tricks of the light. I’d brush my teeth, and my reflection would lag behind, lips moving a second too late. Once, it smiled when I didn’t. I stopped turning on the light at night, but sometimes I’d catch movement in the glass, like someone pacing just out of frame.
Last night, I woke up to the sound of running water. The bathroom door was open. My reflection was already waiting, grinning. I haven’t looked since. If you’re turning 27, don’t look too long. Sometimes, the mirror blinks first.
