It has taken a tragedy, publicly, to bring to the front the issues with metal health. Again.
You see, I am the parent of an adult, now, who is bipolar with schizo affect. Medication doesn’t always do the job.
The families are so close to the situation and of course the human nature of “this can’t be true. Not my child.” Coupled with the patient who has many excuses that we, as family, want to believe. However, we harbor these excuses and the issue is dismissed until the next time.

See, their current reality is real to them. Just like when we were kids and pretending, that reality for a brief time was real too. The issue is that they cannot step out of their reality. Outside influences that to us are common, a song we like to listen to, reels we may watch becomes a reality to them.

Now imagine, how distressed they feel not being capable to understand why you are upset or scared. With these issues sometimes the person will turn to drugs or alcohol to attempt to achieve the feeling of “normal.” This only heightens all issues. Most times they do not remember what happened. With this, they cannot process what you are telling them. Think of it as a dementia patient.

I actually, through a local hospital was able to get help for my adult son. He was placed in a very nice facility. Now, this young man is also a master of disguise. And also studied psychology. He is well equipped when needed. Therefoe when he became lucid he was able to talk his way out. In court, the judge and attorney saw no problem. Stating it was an isolated incident. It wasn’t. And is still ongoing.
As the family, you will have to fight, to advocate to get the help needed for a disease not readily seen. Do not give up. You’re doing the right thing for the patient and yourself.
