Major Fire Engulfs Hong Kong Apartment Blocks
A massive blaze tore through the Wang Fuk Court apartment complex in Hong Kong’s Tai Po district, leaving at least 36 people dead and 279 still missing as firefighters worked through the night. The fire, classified as a level five, is Hong Kong’s most severe in 17 years. More than 800 firefighters and paramedics and over 140 fire engines were deployed.
Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee says the fire is now coming under control, with three of the seven burning buildings no longer showing flames, though dozens of floors remain engulfed. A 37-year-old firefighter, Ho Wai-ho, died battling the blaze and has been praised as “dedicated and gallant.”
Residents describe scenes of devastation—people trapped inside, explosions heard, and bamboo scaffolding fueling the rapid spread of flames. A baby and an elderly woman were rescued overnight, while thousands of evacuees filled temporary shelters seeking news of loved ones.
Officials have arrested three men on suspicion of manslaughter as investigators examine whether the scaffolding and fire-retardant materials met safety standards.
Hong Kong leaders say over 1,400 housing units are ready for displaced families as rescue operations continue.
