In 1997, Demi Moore did something no A-list actress in Hollywood had ever attempted. She shaved her head, stripped away every trace of glamour, and volunteered to be broken.
To play Lieutenant Jordan O'Neil in Ridley Scott's G.I. Jane, Moore didn't just act tough—she lived it.
Before cameras ever rolled, she entered a two-week modified Navy SEAL training program alongside forty men. They never once called her "Demi." She was only addressed as "Jordan"—her character's name.
The trainers did everything they could to break her.
They set her up to be late on the second day, then dragged her to the front of the formation and screamed at her while she dropped into pushups on the ground.
Her days started at 4:00 AM. She ran miles before dawn. She climbed a 60-foot cargo net. She pulled herself up a 25-foot rope. She scaled walls and swung across 30-foot monkey bars.
On one of her first training runs, she vomited after crossing the finish line—she'd taken vitamins on an empty stomach. When she peeled off her boots, her feet were covered in massive blisters.
A consultant told her she didn't have to keep going.
She kept going.
Moore trained with celebrity trainer Gregory Joujon-Roche for physical conditioning and a real Navy SEAL instructor named Stephen Helvenston to develop the mental toughness the role demanded.
She even trained to perform one-armed pushups on camera—and did them herself.
But the world wasn't ready.
The film was, as Moore herself later described, "killed months before anybody had even seen it."
The media questioned whether she deserved her record-breaking salary. Coming off the polarizing reception of Striptease, Moore felt targeted and shamed.
She later reflected that it seemed like she had "betrayed women for Striptease and was betraying men with G.I. Jane."
