Death Lies & Alibis+FollowPERSON OF INTEREST DETAINED IN CASE OF TWO GIRLS FOUND DEAD IN SUITCASES IN CLEVELAND Cleveland police say a person of interest has been detained for questioning in the investigation into two young girls found dead and buried in suitcases in the city’s South-Collinwood neighborhood. Investigators returned to the scene near East 162nd Street and Midland Avenue on March 4 to execute a search warrant at a nearby home. Police stress the individual has not been arrested, but officials say the detention could be a significant development in the case. The victims — both Black girls — are believed to be between 8½ and 14 years old. DNA testing has confirmed the girls were half-sisters, but their identities have not yet been determined. The suitcases were discovered March 2 when a dog walker found one partially buried in a field near Ginn Academy. Officers searching the area located a second suitcase nearby. Authorities say the girls had been buried for “some time,” though their causes of death have not been released. Police are urging the public to help identify the victims, asking residents, schools, youth programs, and community members to report if they know of two girls in this age range who have suddenly disappeared or stopped attending activities. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Cleveland Police Homicide Unit tip line at 216-623-5464 or Cuyahoga County Crimestoppers at 216-252-7463.
