Whole Salmon vs. Filets: Worth the Switch?

Lately, I’ve been obsessed with salmon—seriously, it’s become my go-to meal almost every day. Usually, I just grab those convenient 6oz pre-seasoned filets from the store, about five a week, but the cost adds up fast (around $8 each!). So I started wondering: is it smarter to buy a whole side of salmon instead? I’m not a pro chef, but I figure seasoning and slicing it myself could save money. The store sells whole sides for about $13 a pound, and they usually weigh 2-3 pounds. If I cut it into five pieces, the price seems almost the same as the pre-cut filets. But maybe there’s a trick I’m missing? Anyone else tried this? Is the taste or freshness better? Or is it just more hassle than it’s worth? Would love to hear your experiences before I make the switch. Planning to stock up this afternoon, so any advice is welcome! #SalmonLovers #MealPrep #FoodHacks #BudgetCooking #HealthyEating #Food

$39/lb Grouper? 3 Ways I’m Cutting My Seafood Bill

Watching the price tags on Florida seafood lately is just wild. Grouper at $39/lb, flounder at $25+, even dolphin fish (yeah, mahi) is pushing $20/lb. Used to be able to grab a few fillets without thinking twice, but now it’s almost like buying steak. To keep eating fish 3-5 times a week without draining the bank, I’ve had to get creative. First, I check out the frozen section—sometimes the same fish, just flash-frozen, is half the price of the fresh stuff. Second, I’m hitting up local markets right before closing. A lot of times, they’ll mark down whatever hasn’t sold. Third, I’m buying whole fish when I can and learning to fillet it myself. It’s a bit more work, but the savings add up fast. Not every meal needs to be a big fillet either. I’m making more chowders, fish cakes, and tacos—stretching a pound into a few meals. Seafood’s still expensive, but there are ways to keep it on the table without feeling like you’re splurging every night. #Food knowledge #SeafoodPrices #BudgetCooking #FloridaEats

Quick Poorman Pancakes, with Just Flour and Sugar!

Poorman pancakes are about as simple as it gets. Just flour, sugar, and water—no eggs, no milk, nothing fancy. I poured about a cup of flour into a bowl, tossed in a spoonful of sugar, and slowly added water until it turned into a smooth batter. The trick is not to overmix, or it gets dense. I used a squeeze bottle to get the batter into the pan, which actually helped keep the pancakes round and even. Medium heat is key, and a little margarine in the pan keeps things from sticking. Once bubbles pop up on the surface, it’s time to flip. Each side should be golden brown. These pancakes come out pretty basic, but that’s the point. They’re a blank canvas for whatever toppings are around—maple syrup, peanut butter, or even a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar. Not bad for a quick breakfast or late-night snack. poormancakes #easyrecipes #breakfastideas #budgetcooking #poormancakes #easyrecipes #breakfastideas #budgetcooking #Food #Cooking

$10 Walmart Meals That Actually Surprised Me!

Never thought I'd say this, but these $10 Walmart meals from week 3 actually made me rethink my grocery game. I grabbed the list, half-expecting bland and boring, but ended up genuinely impressed. The portions weren’t tiny, and I didn’t have to drown everything in hot sauce just to get some flavor. The chicken stir fry came together fast, and the veggies weren’t sad or mushy. I did have to get creative with the spices, but nothing felt like a compromise. The only thing that bugged me was the amount of cleanup after, but that’s just part of cooking at home, I guess. It’s wild how much you can stretch ten bucks if you stick to the plan. Not everything was a hit—those canned green beans are never going to be my thing—but overall, it’s kind of wild how doable this is for a family. Not mad about it at all. #WalmartMeals #BudgetCooking #FamilyDinner #MealPlanning #Food #Cooking
