‼️JUDGE RULES DEFENDANT COMPETENT AFTER EXTREME JAIL SELF-HARM A Georgia man accused of killing 43-year-old Bruce Dupree has been ruled competent to stand trial — despite removing both of his own eyes and biting off part of his tongue while in jail. Bruce Dupree was found in October 2024 along Interstate 16 in Bulloch County with multiple stab wounds and defensive injuries. He later died. Prosecutors allege 32-year-old Robert Brandon Keller killed Dupree, then took his vehicle and phone. He faces charges including malice murder, armed robbery, hijacking a motor vehicle, aggravated assault, and weapons offenses. While awaiting trial, Keller severely harmed himself, prompting a court-ordered competency evaluation. Two psychologists testified the self-harm happened after the alleged murder and that at the time of the crime he understood right from wrong. Evaluators said he did not meet criteria for severe mental illness during assessment and that statements about hearing voices appeared strategic. In February 2026, a judge ruled him competent. No trial date has been announced. Bruce’s family remembers him as someone who loved people and stayed close to those around him.
