My Best Shot Happened When I Stopped Trying

I spent three days in the High Tatras chasing the perfect Instagram moment. Golden hour shots, dramatic poses, that whole performance. Then on my last morning, hungover and defeated, I just sat there. No phone positioning, no filter thoughts. Just me and these massive peaks that made me feel properly small. I almost didn't take the photo. My hands were shaky, the light was weird, I looked like hell. But something about that raw moment—the mountains didn't care about my stories or my follower count or whether I was having the transformative experience I'd promised myself. That's the shot. Imperfect, unfiltered, honest. The best picture I've ever taken because I finally stopped trying to take the best picture. The mountains were just being mountains. I was just being me. #TravelTruth #MountainReality #AuthenticTravel #Travel

is the great wall worth the extra drive for peace and quiet?

So, I finally made it to the Great Wall, but not the usual touristy spot everyone talks about. Instead, I drove all the way out to Jinshanling, which took me almost two hours longer than the popular Badaling section. Honestly, I was a bit grumpy about the long drive—my back started to ache, and I kept wondering if it was really worth it. But when I got there, I was shocked: there was hardly anyone around! It felt like I had the whole Great Wall to myself. The views were breathtaking, and the air was so fresh. Plus, the wall here looks much more original—less shiny, more rugged, and you can really feel the history. But here's my dilemma: was all that extra driving and hassle really worth it just to avoid the crowds? Sometimes I wonder if I should've just gone to the closer, more convenient section, even if it meant dealing with more people and a bit of a tourist trap vibe. Have any of you ever gone out of your way for a more 'authentic' experience, only to question if it was worth the trouble? Or do you prefer the convenience, even if it means sharing the spot with a crowd? Would love to hear your stories—especially if you’ve tackled the Great Wall or any other famous place! #greatwall #travelquestions #authentictravel #midlifetravel #emptyplaces #Travel

where should i travel next in latin america?

Last summer, after searching for a breakfast spot in Oaxaca for nearly half an hour, we finally stumbled into a tiny café where the owner chatted with us in Spanish about her family’s mole recipe. That’s the kind of travel I love—real conversations, real food, and not feeling like just another tourist. But here’s the thing: after so many trips to Mexico (CDMX, Guadalajara, Playa del Carmen, even the tourist-packed Puerto Vallarta), I’m itching for somewhere new. I want that authentic vibe, not a place where I order in Spanish and get answered in English, or where every step on the beach means dodging someone selling souvenirs. I’ve been eyeing places like Guanajuato and Puebla in Mexico, but Guatemala’s Lago Atitlán and Antigua look beautiful too. I’m tempted by Colombia—Medellín especially. The food, the colors, the energy! But then I hear warnings about safety, or stories about casual racism, and I wonder if I’m being too cautious or not cautious enough. I’m 6’3” and not exactly blending in, and sometimes I travel with my best friend who’s a Black woman, so I want to make sure we both feel safe and welcome. Plus, I get anxious about being crammed into tiny vans for hours—my knees still remember that colectivo ride in Playa del Carmen! I love food (as long as it’s not seafood), casual hikes, museums, and meeting locals. But I don’t want to end up somewhere so touristy that my Spanish gets ignored, or so off-the-beaten-path that I’m constantly on edge. Has anyone found that sweet spot in Latin America? Maybe a city or town where the food is amazing, the views are stunning, and the locals actually want to chat? And if you’ve traveled as a tall gringo or with friends who stand out, did you feel comfortable? I’m open to anywhere from Honduras to Uruguay, as long as it feels genuine and safe. Sometimes I wonder if I’m overthinking it, but after a few awkward moments in crowded tourist traps, I’d rather be picky than regret it later. #latinamericatravel #foodietravel #authentictravel #Travel
