The mercurial Peter Warlock (1894-1930) — an aptly chosen pseudonym for Philip Haseltine born on October 30, 1894 in London, England. Warlock was an eccentric, intellectually gifted, rebellious character. He was fascinated by Elizabethan and Jacobean music, Renaissance literature, and the occult. His personality was reportedly bohemian, provocative, and often difficult. He used Warlock for all of his compositions, partly to distinguish his composing activities from his work as a music critic. Warlock also formed a close friendship with composer Frederick Delius and published a full-length biography on him as well as contributing in the field of early music. “All music was modern once.” It is a wonderfully concise defense of musical innovation. It reminds us that what one generation considers radical, another may eventually regard as classical.
