JUST IN: The Immunity Gap Is Fueling Larger Measles Outbreaks A small decline in vaccination coverage can create a much bigger public-health problem. As of August 20, the CDC had received reports of 2,777 confirmed measles cases across 47 U.S. jurisdictions. Ninety-four percent were connected to outbreaks—already exceeding the 2,289 cases reported during all of 2025. Kindergarten MMR coverage fell to 92.4% for the 2025–2026 school year, below the 95% community-immunity target. About 280,000 kindergarteners lacked documentation showing completion of the MMR vaccine series. National averages can also hide local communities with much lower coverage. When measles reaches one of these pockets, it can spread quickly. This is not only a vaccination statistic. It is a warning about how small coverage declines can weaken community protection.
