I love physical challenges, but there’s a story tucked away in 2 Samuel 23 that makes me realize I know absolutely nothing about true grit. The Bible casually mentions a warrior named Benaiah. It was a snowy day, and a massive lion had fallen into a pit. Most people would have run away or just thrown spears from the top. Not Benaiah. The text says he actually climbed down INTO the pit to fight a cornered, freezing, terrified apex predator in close-quarters hand-to-hand combat. And he won. Sometimes life traps us in a pit with a massive, terrifying problem—a health diagnosis, a financial collapse.
