Yes, I’ve done that. You should always bake in glass at a lower temperature, anyway, but there can be a hairline crack anyplace, and when the stars line up just right, you stand on one foot at the right moment, it will break. I even knew there was a tiny little thing but it looked like a tiny flaw in the seam, not a crack really. I cleaned my oven for a month after that…sigh…

The dish has scalloped decorative edges if one looks closely. I don’t think it was ever meant to be oven safe, rather a serving dish. If she used it that was before, I think she was just lucky until now.

The plate looks like a serving dish not a baking dish. Usually it will tell you on the bottom of the dish if it is oven proof.

Since many manufacturers don't use high quality glass any longer, this is an unfortunate and dangerous side effect. PYREX and pyrex are not the same quality - PYREX was borosilicate glass and modern pyrex is a different kind of glass that shatters much more easily during abrupt temperature changes. Borosilicate glass is much better at temperature changes, but more expensive to make. There are still makers of borosilicate glass cookware & bakeware, but you need to look for them (Oxo has some, for example).

there was crack in the dish. had nothing to do with the type of batter

The glass dish was probably cold and the oven was preheated to temp so when you placed the dish in it shattered. Especially since it's winter and sitting in the cabinet the dishes sometimes get real cold. You have to make sure the glass isn't too cold going into the heat or this will happen again. Run hot water over the glass dish. Dry and place whatever you are cooking inside then place in oven. It won't heat shock the dish. 💕

The dish was probably not oven save.

If the glass dish is old It will shatter in the oven. I had one even shatter after i took it out of oven .

Dish more than likely had a defect in it from age like a hairline crack which would cause that.
