Do kids nowadays not share bedrooms anymore?

My wife and I recently bought a house. It's technically a two-bedroom, but one is a massive top floor that could easily be semi-divided into shared bedrooms, plus there’s a large, finished basement. The other day, I was chatting with someone about our new place, and they immediately asked, "What will you do if you have two or more children?" I was honestly a bit taken aback. This feels rather silly, considering we currently have no children and none are immediately on the way. But it got me thinking: is it really that crazy for kids to share bedrooms these days? I feel totally out of the loop. I was an only child, so I never shared a room, but my wife did for a while, and most of the kids I knew growing up shared bedrooms too. Maybe that's just a reflection of growing up more working class, and this person has a different, perhaps "higher tax bracket" perspective? I don't know, I was just so surprised by how horrified they seemed at the idea of my two entirely fictional children having a semi-shared room. Uh yeah, kids still share bedrooms. I absolutely hate to use this rhetoric but this was so written from a place of privilege. 😂

I had to share with my sister from 6 until I was probably 9, and when she would move back in. I had 3 brothers,we had a four bedroom house. I hated sharing my room. My oldest 2 had to share but my son and the youngest two didn’t. I know they appreciated it!

Shared a room with my sister until I started college. Then our youngest sister & I switched rooms. My brothers also shared a room for years and years. 4 bedrooms & 6 kids. I don't understand the aversion to sharing a bedroom with your sibling.

My offspring had separate bedrooms. How else can parents teach about Healthy Boundaries and the need for Privacy. Respect.

My mom had 5 kids we all had our own bedrooms. Still had 2 empty ones back of the house. BUT...I was always scared and used to go sleep in my brothers room. Kids like to be together.

Look at it this way- if you can afford a house with separate rooms for your children- make it happen! And if you cannot afford a house like that….then the kiddos have to share. Simple as that. It’s about affordability.
