My Hands Never Looked Like Theirs

Some people have hands that look soft, almost delicate. Mine are always cracked somewhere—red knuckles in winter, hangnails I pick at until they bleed. I keep a tube of hand cream in every bag, but I forget to use it until it’s too late and the skin stings. I used to stare at my hands in meetings, tucking them under the table, embarrassed by the roughness and the way my nails never look clean enough. I’ve tried every overnight glove, every oil, every trick, but they still look tired, like they belong to someone who works too hard at hiding them.
