DIY Decaf Tea: Does the Steeping Trick Really Work?

Grab your favorite loose tea or a teabag and put it in your teapot or mug. Pour just enough boiling water to cover the leaves or bag. Let it steep for about 30 seconds to a minute. This is where some of the caffeine will leach out into the water. Pour off that first steep (don’t drink it!). This is the part that’s supposed to have the most caffeine. Add fresh boiling water to the same leaves or bag and steep as usual. Now you can drink it! The caffeine content is lower, but not totally gone—expect about 20% less caffeine. Some folks say this method is a myth, but I’ve noticed a difference. If you’re super sensitive to caffeine, herbal teas are a safer bet.
