Why Do Drivers Speed Up When You Try to Pass?

Today I was driving behind someone going 5-10 mph under the speed limit. I’m not the type to tailgate, so I kept my distance. But when I tried to pass, suddenly they sped up! It’s so confusing—if you’re driving slow, why not just let others pass safely? I ended up passing because I didn’t want to start a line of tailgaters behind me.
