Why Don’t We Teach Reasoning Skills in High School?

Confession time: as someone who teaches 12th grade English in bustling Chicago, I’m constantly bewildered by one thing—why don’t we explicitly teach inductive and deductive reasoning in high school? 🤔 With my background in philosophy, I know firsthand how these skills illuminate the world and sharpen our arguments. Yet, my students often stare blankly at claims and evidence, lost in a fog of confusion. Imagine if we devoted just one lively unit to syllogisms! The transformation in their critical thinking would be nothing short of magical. Is it oversight, or do we fear that logic is too abstract for young minds?
