Is It Normal to Hand Over My Bank Details Before Even Starting the Job?

I just landed a new job, and before I even set foot in the office, HR asked for my bank details. Honestly, it caught me off guard. I mean, shouldn’t that come after I’ve actually started working? 😅 I’m pretty new to the whole professional world, so I don’t know if this is standard or if I should be worried. My friends are split—some say it’s for payroll, others think it’s sketchy. I really want to trust my new team, but this makes me feel uneasy and a bit lost. Has anyone else been in this situation?
