Why Do Phone Calls With My Boyfriend Feel Like a Job Interview?

Okay, real talk: why is talking to my boyfriend on the phone so freaking hard? Like, everyone says you need to have these deep, meaningful convos for a relationship to work, but half the time I’m just staring at my ceiling, praying he’ll say something other than “so… how was your day?” I try to plan the calls, text him first, make sure he’s not busy, but then it’s like, I’m auditioning for Girlfriend of the Year and he’s just… there. Multitasking. I can literally hear his keyboard. And don’t get me started on small talk. I ask about his day, he grunts. I try to share a story, he laughs (I think?), but then it’s dead air. Compliments? Please. I get a “cool” if I’m lucky. I want to be that couple who talks for hours, but honestly? Sometimes I hang up and just feel lonelier.
