My Toaster Caught Fire. I Panicked.

I always thought I’d be calm in an emergency. Turns out, I’m not. The toaster started sparking—crumbs I never bothered to clean, probably. I yanked the plug, but my hands shook so hard I nearly dropped it. Smoke everywhere. I couldn’t remember if it was baking soda or flour you’re supposed to use. I grabbed the wrong one first. The fire was small, but my panic was huge. I kept thinking about my security deposit, the smell in the curtains, the cost of a new toaster.
