When Confidence at Work Becomes a Problem?

Last week, I had my annual review with my new manager. Everything was positive—except for one thing. He told me that my confidence and directness sometimes make others uncomfortable, and maybe I should tone it down. Wait, what? As a woman of color, I’ve worked hard to be knowledgeable and assertive. I always ask for feedback and actually use it! Now I’m left wondering: should I really dial back who I am just to make others feel better? Or is this a sign I should look for a place that values my strengths? Honestly, I’m torn and a bit frustrated. Has anyone else faced this? What would you do in my shoes?
