After 30 years in medicine, I finally cut back my hours—yet no one even noticed! Going from 13 to 8 calls a month felt huge to me, but apparently, I’m still the go-to anesthesiologist. I love the rush of saving lives, but honestly, I’m missing out on my other passions. When I work these long shifts, my mood tanks and my sneakers gather dust. Every time I mention retiring at 62, people act like I’m committing a crime. “You’re too young! Don’t waste your talent!” they say. But what if I want to enjoy life while I still have the energy? I worry about losing my identity as a doctor, yet I’ve never judged anyone by their job. Most colleagues who retire early seem to regret it—or come crawling back.
