When Valedictorian Dreams Meet Classroom Reality 😳

Let me tell you about my week at Lincoln High. I teach AP classes, and every year, I get a few students (and their parents) asking for grade bumps. But this year, I keep hearing, "But my kid wants to be valedictorian!" As if wanting it badly enough should magically fix missing assignments. One parent even emailed me, saying their child didn't understand the instructions—so they just skipped half the work. I couldn't help but wonder: is this really valedictorian material? Because every other student managed just fine. To make matters worse, students run to their counselors, who then send them right back to us, as if we’re the villains. I’m exhausted and honestly, a little angry. How do we teach accountability when everyone wants a shortcut? What would you do if you were in my shoes?
