Green Potatoes at the Store Again? Here’s What’s Up 🥔

Every bag of potatoes I’ve picked up lately has a green tint, and it’s honestly concerning. Green potatoes aren’t just a cosmetic issue—they contain solanine, a toxin that can cause nausea, headaches, and even more serious symptoms if eaten in large amounts. This happens when potatoes are exposed to light, which triggers the production of chlorophyll (the green color) and solanine. Cutting away the green parts can help, but if the whole potato is green, it’s best to skip it. It’s not about being overly cautious; it’s just not worth the risk. Grocery stores should be more careful with storage, but until then, I’m sticking to my homegrown stash or looking for better options. Anyone else noticing this trend lately? #Food knowledge #potatoproblems #grocerystorefinds #foodfacts

I ordered potatoes with my pickup ? when I got home I discovered the potatoes were green. I quickly went on my account on line and they refunded my money. This must be costing Walmart alot of money. Always check your order!👍

I've been a produce manager for 10 years we don't sell green pattoes and yes the light is a big factor in turning pattoes green that's why we store them in cool dark places and if your pattatoe doesn't sprout after a few weeks it was sprayed with a chemical that keeps it from sprouting last but not least in early spring and fall pattoes sprout more easily as it's in there dna to reproduce.I have one saying I live buy for produce if I wouldn't sell it to my mother I won't sell it to you

The produce manager at the store I shop at said he had never seen a green potato. I showed him all the green potatoes he had just put out and educated him in the dangers.

Yes, cutting off the green part of a potato is generally safe and recommended. The green color indicates the presence of solanine, a toxic compound, but it's usually limited to the outer layer of the potato. By peeling the skin or cutting away the green area, you can remove the solanine and safely eat the potato. Here's a more detailed explanation: Why potatoes turn green: When exposed to light, potatoes produce chlorophyll, which gives them a green color. This process also triggers the production of solanine, a natural pesticide that can be harmful to humans in large quantities. Solanine's effects: Solanine can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea if consumed in high amounts. How to make green potatoes safe: You can make green potatoes safe to eat by removing the green layer. This can be done by peeling the potato or by cutting away the green areas. Preventing greening: To prevent potatoes from turning green, store them in a cool, dark place.
