Did you know Cinco de Mayo isn’t Mexico’s Independence Day? It actually celebrates a wild underdog win against the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862! The French tried to take over while the U.S. was busy with its Civil War, but Mexico pulled off a surprise victory. Ironically, it’s a bigger party in the U.S. than in Mexico—over there, it’s not even a federal holiday.
