why does he always bring up money during arguments?

Every time my boyfriend and I argue, he somehow ends up talking about how much money he’s spent on me. He says it's not about being cheap, but that he wants me to know how good he’s been to me. The thing is, I’m just trying to focus on the issue at hand, but he brings up the money—how much he’s spent and how he’s never asked for anything in return. He always tells me that he’s not hesitant to spend on me, but the constant mention of money during fights leaves me confused. Is this really his way of showing he cares? Or does it just mean he’s more focused on what he’s putting out financially than on the emotional aspect of our relationship?
