how does someone spend 3 weeks planning a 7-day trip?

So my dad spends about 3 weeks (yes, you read that right) planning every single detail of a 7-day vacation. He dives into books, Googles everything, and puts together the most detailed itineraries you can imagine. The results are always amazing, and he finds the best spots to visit—but the prep time is crazy. I tend to just pack a bag, book a flight, and figure it out as I go. But now I’m wondering... am I missing out on some genius way of planning? How much time do you typically spend on trip prep?
