Why is dressing nice a problem in the Bay Area?

So I dressed up for a Bay Area job interview—nothing crazy, just formal to show I cared. And guess what? They straight-up told me I was overdressed and it didn’t fit their office culture. Like…what?! I expected job hunting to be tough—maybe getting stuck on algorithms or industry experience—but getting judged for dressing too well? Wild. Isn’t this the land of “freedom”? Guess not when it comes to clothes. East Coast? Business casual at best. West Coast? Apparently, jeans and a hoodie are the way to go. Lesson learned.
