Siemens Confirms U.S. Lifted EDA Export Restrictions to China — Things Just Shifted
Siemens just confirmed that the U.S. has lifted export restrictions on certain chip design tools (specifically EDA software) to China. They got the official word from the U.S. Department of Commerce, and now they’ve resumed full access, sales, and tech support for Chinese clients.
For those unfamiliar, EDA tools are crucial for designing chips—phones, computers, cars, all of it. Without these, chipmakers are basically stuck. So this is not a small policy tweak—it’s a big door reopening.
Siemens says the restrictions from a May 23 letter are now “no longer applicable.” Sounds like ECCNs 3D991 and 3E991 are back in play. No idea yet what triggered the reversal, but it’s clear this will have ripple effects across the chip industry, especially in China.
It also says something about how fast and unpredictable tech trade policy can move these days. Just a month ago, it was red tape everywhere. Now? Business as usual.
Interesting times.
